Good to Know Before You Travel
Visa
UK passport holders can enter Spain, including Madrid, without a visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area. From May 2025, UK citizens will need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), a visa waiver that costs €7 and is valid for three years or until your passport expires. Additionally, travellers may be asked to provide proof of sufficient funds (approximately €113.40 per day) and evidence of accommodation during their stay.
Currency
The official currency in Madrid is the Euro (€). Banknotes are available in denominations of €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200, and €500, while coins come in €1, €2, and cents of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops. However, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments or markets. ATMs are readily available throughout the city, and currency exchange services can be found at banks and exchange bureaus.
Vaccination
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry into Spain. However, it's recommended that travellers are up to date with routine vaccinations, including MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, polio), and COVID-19. Additional vaccines such as Hepatitis A and Tetanus are commonly advised. Depending on your activities and length of stay, Typhoid, Rabies, and Hepatitis B may also be considered.
