Lisbon faced a tragedy on September 3, 2025, when the historic Elevador da Glória funicular derailed and crashed into a building during the busy evening rush hour.

A total of 16 people lost their lives in the accident, including three British nationals. The victims also included citizens from Portugal, South Korea, Canada, the United States, France, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Between 21 and 23 others were injured, with several in serious condition.

According to initial reports, the funicular car detached from its cable and sped uncontrollably down the steep track before crashing into a building at the base of the line. Witnesses described the tram crumpling upon impact, leaving little chance for passengers to escape.

Transport workers had previously raised concerns about braking problems caused by cable tension issues; however, the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Authorities have ruled out sabotage. Investigations are now focused on mechanical failure or maintenance issues. A preliminary technical report is expected soon, while the full findings will be released in the coming weeks.

Lisbon’s public transport operator confirmed that routine maintenance was being carried out. This included daily, weekly, and monthly inspections, with a full service completed within the past year.

In response to the disaster, the Portuguese government declared a national day of mourning. Senior leaders, including the prime minister, president, and mayor of Lisbon, attended a memorial service to honor the victims. Operations of similar funicular services in the city have been suspended while safety reviews take place.
