The ongoing U.S. government shutdown is causing increasing problems across the nation’s aviation network. Unpaid air traffic controllers are struggling to keep up with their growing workloads and financial pressure. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that delays and cancellations are likely to rise as the shutdown enters its second month.
Thousands of flights have already been impacted. Major airports, including Los Angeles International and Newark Liberty, report significant delays due to staffing shortages. Controllers, who are essential workers, must continue working without pay. Officials say this situation is becoming unsustainable.
According to Duffy, many controllers are taking second jobs or calling in sick to manage their personal finances. This is putting even more strain on the system. “Our controllers are doing their best under extraordinary circumstances, but fatigue and stress are taking a toll,” he said.
Industry observers believe the lack of rested and focused staff could jeopardize safety and efficiency. Several airports have had to ground flights temporarily or operate on reduced schedules to cope with the pressure. Travelers are already experiencing longer lines, extended wait times, and unpredictable departure schedules.
The Federal Aviation Administration has advised passengers to check flight updates frequently, especially before major travel events and holidays. With no immediate solution to the shutdown in sight, experts warn that disruptions may become more widespread in the coming weeks.
As negotiations in Washington remain stalled, the aviation sector faces growing uncertainty. This situation is a stark reminder that even the most critical systems rely on the people behind them.
